Educational Programs:

Jefferson County Envirothon

What is an ENVIROTHON? An educational and fun event held outside at Thompson Park, Watertown, in May each year. Through a series of interactive contests in which teams of local high school students compete against one another in areas such as soils, aquatics, forestry, and wildlife. The competitors are judged in many areas, including their insightful solutions to environmental concerns and their video productions. Combining hands-on education with the excitement of friendly competition, the Envirothon is an effective tool we utilize to assist our schools in promoting environmental awareness. Each year, the winning team from our Envirothon moves on to compete in the New York State Envirothon. At the state level, they receive various prizes, including college scholarships. The winner of the state Envirothon goes on to the national competition, the “Canon Envirothon”.

Interested? Students may contact their school to form a team. Businesses or private individuals can sponsor the program by making a donation to Jefferson County SWCD. Contact Wayne Sech for team information or Rhonda Redder to make a donation, 782-2749 wsech@centralny.twcbc.com or rredder@centralny.twcbc.com .

Farm Home Safety Day Camp

Our office hosts a camp for 5th grade students of Jefferson County in May each year. It is a relatively new program which was held at the Watertown Ice Arena for four years. In 2007, we contracted with BOCES through their exploratory enrichment grant and held the camp at Old McDonald's Farm in Sackets Harbor, NY. Presentations were made by local agencies on safety topics such as: ATV Safety, Fire Safety/Prevention, Animal Safety, Firearm Safety, Public Health – Smoking, 911, and Lawnmower Safety. The groups of students rotate throughout the day so that they are able to hear each presentation. At Old McDonald's, we were able to incorporate a tour of the Robbins dairy farm. In addition, ice cream and milk were served by the Jefferson County Dairy Princess. Of course, there was an opportunity to enjoy the farm as well. (Please see the June 2007 newsletter by clicking on NEWSLETTERS above) If you have a 5th grade student in Jefferson County, please check with your child's teacher to see if your school is planning to attend.
