Jefferson County

Soil and Water Conservation District

ABOUT US

History: Jefferson County SWCD was formed on May 7, 1956 by resolution of the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors. The District is an authorized County agency and political subdivision of New York State. Approximately 60% of our funding is from Jefferson County, 35% is raised through our earned income programs, and 5% is reimbursed by New York State.

Mission: To bring people, government agencies, and private interests together to manage Jefferson County’s natural resources.

Currently: The Jefferson County Legislature appoints our Board of Directors and staff are hired by the Board. We work closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies such as the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

What does the SWCD do? We offer a wide variety of conservation related services and programs. (Click on the Services link at the bottom of the page for more information)
